Running your own business is one of the hardest, yet most rewarding things you can do in life. It is most people’s dream to give up their day job and become their own boss. Before you take the plunge however, make sure you know exactly what to expect and have the right personality to deal with the challenges that it brings. Unfortunately, not everybody is suited to it!
Mind-set, Motivation & Will
These are essential attributes for any entrepreneur or business owner to have. There will be tough times, highly stressful situations and you’ll be working 7 days a week for a considerable amount of time – only those people who are truly motivated and refuse to give in can really be successful. It is important to be prepared to put everything you have in to your business to make it a success. You can then reap the rewards further down the line when you start to relax a bit more.
Plan, Plan & Plan Again
Before going in to business on your own, the single most important thing you can do is plan every aspect. Financials, marketing and detailed business plans are essential. Even though you might think you have come up with a brilliant business idea, it’s possible that other people have already thought of it, but not found the idea financially viable. Before you set up your business, it’s crucial to do extensive market research and look at your competitors to see if your business can sustain.
Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees
Budgeting is incredibly important in any business. Be cautious with what you spend and if you can’t afford to hire an account, try to invest in bookkeeping software. It helps you manage your invoices and record your incoming and outgoing cash flow. Doing your own bookkeeping has the advantage that you’re able to see yourself where your business money is actually going and it will help you understand your own business a lot better in the future.
Don’t forget you will need some initial money to launch your business. The best way to get hold of this is by trying to get a small business loan. In the early stages of your business, it’s advisable to cut back wherever you can. If your business requires equipment, see whether you really need it already. Likewise, try to bargain down your supplier’s prices and don’t make any promises about bonuses to your employees just yet.
It’ll Be Hard to Get Your Name Out There
The only way for your business to grow is by increasing your (online) visibility and building up a network of contacts. Although you might not have the budget in the beginning to invest in expensive marketing tools or advertising, there are some easier ways to get your name out there. Make sure people can find you online by building a professional-looking website that’s SEO-optimised and easy to use. Submit your company to local directories, submit guest posts and post regularly on your social media. Make sure you have a clear idea of who your target audience is so you’re not wasting any time or money. By attending networking events, you can get to know potential partners or customers more easily and learn how to improve your business.
Just remember, setting up your own business will be hard and there will definitely be times that you just want to quit. However, it’s all a matter of planning, building a solid network and develop the ability to deal with unforeseen circumstances. See the world as a place of possibility and don’t let one adversity bring you down!
