How to Cope with a Long Commute

Last Updated on September 16, 2021 by Bharat Saini

Sometimes, the perfect job isn’t right on your doorstep. If you want to land your dream job, you might need to look further afield and that means preparing for a long commute. This article will look at some of the most important tips for coping with a long commute.

Leave for work early

If you can’t avoid a lengthy commute, then give yourself plenty of time to get to the office. If possible, leave with plenty of spare time and don’t rush on the road. You may find it helpful to plan your journey in advance using an online resource like Google Maps.

Create a relaxing environment

If you have a few hours on the train to work, make sure that you can relax. Put on some quiet music or an audiobook and make sure your phone is switched onto airplane mode, so you won’t be disturbed by texts and emails. A comfortable seat is also essential if you want to avoid getting a stiff neck.

Get your home life in order

If you have a lengthy commute, it’s even more important that your home life is in order. You may have to spend less time around the house if you want to maintain a similar standard of living. You could hire a cleaner to come a couple of times a week, remove some of the clutter, and use a service like Exceptionalpets.com to look after your pets.

Make time for yourself

A lengthy commute is often associated with a lack of free time. But you shouldn’t let this deter you from squeezing in some personal interests during your journey. Whether it’s reading the newspaper or taking up a new hobby, make sure you get proper rest and relaxation on the train. This will help your mental wellbeing and productivity at work.

Try public transportation or carpooling

If you’re able to, consider using public transportation or sharing a ride with a colleague. You might not be able to avoid a lengthy commute entirely, but it may help if you don’t have to tackle all the problems yourself.

Pack food and beverages

If you’re reliant on public transport or if your commute is so long that you arrive at work hungry, pack some food and drinks in advance. It might help to make a break halfway through your journey. This could also give you the opportunity to stretch your legs and stand up for a little while. If you prefer the train, make sure you book a seat! There’s nothing worse than having to stand up for hours.

Limit technology use

If you’re staring at your phone or tablet for hours each day, then it’s time to cut back. Keep your device charging in the office so that you don’t have an excuse to look at social media during the commute. Likewise, avoid reading work emails on your smartphone if you want to prevent yourself from becoming distracted and instead do something relaxing.

Determine your job satisfaction

Jobs are only worthwhile if they bring satisfaction. Talk to your employer about flexible working hours, telecommuting, or even a shorter commute. If you’re unhappy with your current position, it might be time to look for another job.
