Successful leaders are distinctive in their actions and attributes which are more like personality traits than true management skills, and they ultimately build trust. They are the power and intellect behind their organizations. They are the visionaries charged with steering their brand around pitfalls. It may seem like some people are just gifted with the leadership skills, but the truth is most leadership traits can be learned and sharpened with time and practice. For some leaders this prowess is innate and for others it is a leadership skill that must be honed through experience.  Successful leaders:

  • Act timely and master the importance of time. They devote the majority of their time to those areas that truly need it. They choose to allocate their time and that of others appropriately. They make timely decisions as often as decisions are needed – no more and no less. Leaders understand the nature of time and are skilled at prioritizing it to make an impact.
  • Are Realistic as their unrelenting focus is on – what really is and that truly distinguishes them. They seek only the truth and welcome any and all reality checks. It’s a leadership imperative to facing reality and it isn’t merely a good idea.
  • Are Unscripted as it’s obvious to any twenty-first-century leader that many people are reluctant to believe anything and everything. People long for is authenticity and want leaders who speak plainly and from the heart, not from talking points. Professionals who don’t cloak themselves in a blanket of buzz-speak are the successful bosses. In order to lead, it is critical to master the authenticity. Reject the tired clichés, lose the latest buzzwords, and say what you mean and mean what you say.
  • Are Sensitive and are acutely aware of their surroundings and are as well keenly observant. They have an intuitive knack for understanding the motivations of others. They are perceptive and are able to feel the barely perceptible winds of change long before the actual storm. They have the uncanny ability to gain insight from seemingly disparate data. They read others in complex social situations and trust their own gut feelings. They aptly handle displays of emotion in themselves and in others and easily move from perception to action. Most suceessful leaders are a natural at these sorts of skills. Others need to regularly extricate themselves from day-to-day activities to work on these leadership skills. Either way, being sensitive is skill that gives leaders another arrow in their organizational growth quiver.
  • Are transparent,as its human nature not to trust those who attempt to hide things from us. Leaders who are transparent in their actions make their organizations also transparent by placing their organization behind glass and enable people see the fascinating inner workings of such efficient organizations. Such organizations are the ones that consistently grow and come out ahead in the long run. Those who are forthcoming with information – good and bad – can more effectively lead a team to accomplish great things. Fostering transparency takes commitment and confidence. It can be tempting to hide problems, but the transparent leader knows that the truth eventually slips out anyway – and often looks worse than it did originally. Truth cannot be hidden forever like the Sun and the Moon.

Successful leader know when to seize opportunities and how to rally employees to work hard toward their company’s goals. They have found a way to achieve the right combination of charisma, enthusiasm and self-assurance, probably with a healthy dose of luck and timing.
