Shri Pradeep Kumar Kushwaha who attained 3rd Rank in his 3rd attempt in Tripura Judicial Services Examination, 2015; in an important, exclusive, thought-provoking and highly inspiring interview; attributes strong will power, strong self confidence, hard work and excellent guidance to the secrets of his success. On exact moment of realising importance of ‘Judicial Services’:
Yes, my father had been an employee of Civil Court Chhapra (Bihar) and I used to go with him since my childhood. He always told me that gentleman sitting on the ijlas [dias of court room] is Hakim (a judge). The kind of respect, a judge gets from society and the role he plays as a part of judicial system for a coherent and peaceful society, created some kind of fascination inside me.
On the point of time of making up mind to make career in ‘Judicial Services’:
The day I got admitted to Banaras Hindu University for graduation (B.A.), it provided me the perfect platform to achieve my real fascination of becoming a judge. In order to move in that direction, after graduation, I got admitted in L-L.B. in (CLC), University of Delhi and my real preparation for the Judicial Services began at the first day of class of L-L.B. started.
On having read toppers interviews in newspapers and magazines, one that inspired the most and particular success story which influenced your journey to this result:
A success story always inspires you and there is no such particular instance.
On the first step on really becoming serious about making a career in ‘Judicial Services’:
For clearing Judicial Services Exam., one needs conceptual clarity of law and command over bare provision. In that direction, I studied cases of laws very extensively in Law Faculty Delhi University classes. To give my preparation a professional touch and refining my concept of law, I joined Rahul’s IAS.
On ‘Judicial Services’ being a planned decision or parents’ wish:
It was my planned decision to prepare for Judicial Services Examination.
On time-frame for the examination preparations and number of attempts:
I was not concerned about any time-frame. I just wanted to crack it, irrespective of no. of attempts or time-frame.
On confidence of success in this examination and reaction to this news of success:
I was confident of my preparation and I was expecting to get through, though achieving 3rd rank was a pleasant surprise. It was a very joyous moment and I just called to my younger brother to share my hard fought achievement.
On the kind of questions asked in interview and reaction of board:
My interview went well, about 25 minutes. Questions were primarily on procedural laws like-what is the purpose behind section 313 of CrPC, can accused person be a witness (315), irregularity in charge-framing (215-464), difference between investigation and inquiry, what is anticipatory bail 438 CrPC. Honourable Chief Justice of Tripura High Court Mr. Justice Deepak Gupta was very much pleased with my answers.
On the number of attempts, achieving success in the attempt and visualizing previous attempts?
Initially I did not get qualify for prelims but I was determined so I kept preparation by improving every next day.
On preparing for other career opportunities as well while preparing for ultimate goal i.e. Career in ‘Judicial Services’:
No, I never even thought of any career options, I always had a second option of advocacy.
On Motivation towards ‘Judicial Services’ despite other lucrative opportunities in changing economic environment:
Its sheer importance as a significant cog in whole establishment of democracy and its great social quotient kept me motivated.
On approach towards General Studies:
So far GS is concerned; I am really indebted to Pratiyogita Darpan. PD is like a small capsule which keeps your understanding of whole gamut of GS very vibrant and updated. Apart from current affairs its regular features are greatly useful.

On Educational Level to start & minimum time-frame for preparation for ‘Judicial Services’:
Initially one should start preparation during L-L.B. itself so that one can be armed with all the requirements for clearing exam. Later on, one needs a whole year to hold full command over preparation.
On impact of educational, financial and demographic status of the family of an aspirant on preparation:
Yes, it has impact in one way or the other, but finally things boil down to the individual’s commitment and perseverance.
On role the Competition Magazines play in preparing for an examination like ‘Judicial Services’:
The competition magazines keep you updated on various fronts apart from guidance and material for preparation.
On finding “Pratiyogita Darpan” close to expectations;
It is very good magazine. I would like to give it grade-A. There may be addition of regular features on current judgements of Supreme Court in layman’s language which would be useful for aspirants preparing for various competitive examinations.
On the Secret of Success:
Hard work and great faith in myself and above all well-wishes of my parents and well wishers
On giving Credit for success:
The credit of my success solely goes to my father.

After analysing strength and weakness one has to keep faith in oneself and ensure the continuous efforts to keep your study plan intact.
