Nursing Courses and Career after 12th in India

Nursing is one of the most sought-after paramedical specializations preferred by many students after completion of their schooling/after 12th. The nursing courses focus on the services and processes related to the healthcare industry comprising taking care of the patients, first-aid, supervising the doctors, etc. In both government and commercial healthcare institutions, there is always a great demand for qualified nurses.

Job prospects after completion of nursing course 

  • Nurse: The job of the nurse is to take care of patients. They assist doctors with a wide range of treatments. They ensure that all the tools and equipment are ready for the procedure.
  • Nurse Educator: The nurse educator is in charge of nurse education. Their job is to assist the nurses and provide them with the instructions, which need to be followed.
  • Chief nursing officer: The chief nursing officer is a member of the senior management team and their job profile includes leading people, acting as a spokesperson for the nurses, serving as a community leader, etc.
  • Critical care nurse: The critical care nurses are responsible for the pre and post-operative care of the patients. These nurses can work as managers and policymakers.
  • Registered nurse: Registered nurses are the ones who deal with patients on a regular basis. They conduct their tests and also take care of them.
  • Clinical nurse manager: Their job role is to supervise a team of nurses and make sure that their units have adequate staff, maintain track of patient admissions and discharges, etc.

Types of nursing courses after 12th 

There are different types of diploma and degree nursing courses that the candidates can pursue:

B.Sc. Nursing: B.Sc. Nursing is another popular course of nursing. This sector deals with academic knowledge of the sectors of nursing. The students who have studied PCB can join the course. The career scope includes clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetic, case manager, certified nurse midwife, staff nurse, etc.

Diploma in Nursing: A diploma in nursing is an advanced course in nursing that can be pursued after the 12th. A diploma holder in nursing can apply for different nursing jobs in any of the medical facilities of the country, be it government or private. The duration of the diploma course in nursing is of three years comprising training in different aspects of general nursing.

General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM): GNM is one of the most pursued nursing courses. To pursue this course, the candidate must have studied science at the 12th level. The course is of around 3 years of duration. After pursuing the GNM course, the students can become ICU nurses, nursing tutors, certified nursing assistants, home care nurses, etc.

Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM): ANM is a diploma course that can be pursued after completion of the 12th. The course duration is of 2 years and the students can join various nursing fields. The candidates must have qualified 10+2 in the arts or science stream. The career scope after studying ANM includes health visitors, rural health workers, home nurses, basic health workers, etc.

Psychiatry and mental health nursing: Psychiatry and mental health is a specialization course that comprises medical and therapeutic counseling practice. The students have to undergo detailed training in handling patients facing different mental conditions. The duration of this nursing course differs from one year to two years.

Nursing is one of the best fields to choose from as it is considered one of the noble professions. The students learn how to reach out to communities and families experiencing different health issues in order to fix their difficulties. After finishing 12th grade in either science or arts, the students can enroll in a nursing course.
