The changes in glaze, weight, and chemical treatments can’t be done easily with fresh seafood. So, when you order seafood online, check these to ensure that the product is fresh. For some seafood like shrimp and lobster, freezing and thawing are needed to keep them fresh and it won’t affect its quality and taste if done properly. So, getting frozen lobsters and shrimp online is preferred.

Whether you’re buying mackerel, crabs, oysters, or any other seafood, you should always rely on your nose than believing the seller. Several key smells can be used to identify whether the online seafood ordered are fresh or spoilt. In the case of fish fillets, there will be a mild odor if they are fresh. For seafood like clams, mussels, and other forms of shellfish, the smell will be vaguely sweet, which is compared with the smell of fresh sea breeze. If you get some other odor in your seafood that is ordered online, you can tell it’s spoiled. Raw shrimp meat has a much mild odor, and their spoilage can be identified using visual signs of blackened edges or random spotting.

The freshness of the fish can be determined by poking the fish. When you poke the fish you should feel the cold, wet flesh that is not sticky, gills that not over slimy, shiniest scales with bright color to tell the seafood is fresh. If you find scales to be soft, then you can say that ordered seafood online is old and not fresh.

Buying a whole fish is not only of great value but offers more amount of fish to cook with. When buying an entire flounder or mackerel online, you have to check the eyes of the fish. The fresh fish will have plump and wet eyes with little to no clouding. When the fish starts to rot or get spoilt the eyes start to become gloomy indicating a foul fish. If the eyes begin to sink in or shrivel, it means the fish is no longer viable for eating. Once you get your online ordered seafood, it is important to check all these to ensure quality and freshness.

To tell if a clam or mussel is fresh, their shell should be closed tightly and should have a sweet odor. It is important to store them on ice right away, once you get them after you order seafood online to keep it fresh.
