Moving to another country is the start of an exciting new adventure for you. Your relocation may be the result of a new job involving new responsibilities and opportunities, or you may simply want to experience life in a country and culture that is different to your own. Whatever the reason for your move, there are certain preparatory steps that you can take to ensure that your first few months in your new country are as smooth and stress free as possible.
Research visa requirements and work permits
Firstly, ensure that you remain on the right side of the law in your new country by researching and applying for any necessary visas and work permits. If you already have a job lined up, your employers may be able to help you in applying for a work permit. Furthermore, your visa may have certain requirements that you need to adhere to. For example, an Australian Working Holiday Visa allows travellers from certain countries between the ages of 18 and 30 to live and work in Australia for one year from the day you enter the country.
Research vaccination and other health requirements
You may be moving to a country that has a high risk of certain diseases, such as malaria and yellow fever, for which there are available preventive medications and vaccinations. Indeed, certain countries require certification that you have been vaccinated against diseases, like yellow fever. Organize any relevant vaccinations before you travel, and have your doctor write you out a prescription for any existing medication you take, which you can show to your doctor in your new home. Furthermore, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, new arrivals may be subject to quarantine; be sure to check for the relevant quarantine guidance for your country before embarking.
Find accommodation
You might be planning to spend your first couple of weeks in a hotel while you find suitable long-term accommodation. However, it is entirely possible – and less stressful – to organize accommodation before you leave. Consult estate agents in your destination who will help you to find a suitable property for sale or to rent. They can also inform you or any legal requirements that you need to sort out and advise you of the best ways to do these. For instance, check out robertoandco.com for more information on buying or renting a property if you are moving to the London area.
Research your destination
Although part of the fun of travel is exploring and discovering a new destination, there are certain things you will want to research to ensure that you settle into your new country as quickly as possible. Finding out about the culture, for instance, can help you to avoid making any gaffes that mark you out as a foreigner, helping you to feel more at home in your new surroundings. If you are working, there may be differences in the work culture that you have to get used to – if you are in doubt, ask your new employer or colleagues for advice.
