Pratiyogita Darpan recently had the honor of interviewing Ms. Surpreet Kaur, who achieved success in the prestigious Delhi Judicial Service Exam, 2017. We offer our heartfelt congratulations to her on this remarkable accomplishment. We present her inspiring journey here, with valuable insights for future aspirants.

Pratiyogita Darpan (PD): Congratulations on your success in the Judicial Services Examination! It’s a commendable achievement.

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Thank you very much.

PD: When did you first recognize the importance of the Judicial Services?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: During my law college days, I interned at various courts and worked with legal aid programs. Witnessing the respect and dignity attached to the judiciary, I decided to pursue a career in Judicial Services during my college years.

PD: At what point did you commit to preparing for the Judicial Services?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: I made up my mind in the second year of law college and started coaching to build my foundation early.

PD: Did you find any success stories particularly inspiring?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Absolutely. I read interviews with previous toppers in Pratiyogita Darpan, which kept me motivated. I was especially inspired by stories of individuals who overcame significant obstacles to succeed.

PD: Was this career choice influenced by your family? Did you plan a specific timeline for your preparation?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: It was a collective decision. My family admired the respect associated with the judiciary, and I shared their enthusiasm. I was committed to the Delhi Judicial Services and ready to invest the time required to succeed.

PD: What were your initial steps when you began serious preparations?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: In my final semester, I joined Ambition Law Institute for coaching. This was instrumental, as the faculty’s guidance, particularly from Alok Kumar Ranjan Sir, helped me grasp essential concepts. The notes I prepared during coaching became invaluable.

PD: Did you expect to perform so well in the exam? How did you react when you saw your result?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: I was confident in my preparation, but securing such a high rank was a wonderful surprise. I was overjoyed.

PD: How many attempts did it take for you to succeed?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: I achieved success in my first attempt. After clearing the prelims, I left my job to dedicate myself fully to the main exams. I focused on deepening my understanding of the law and strengthening my General Knowledge, which was a weaker area.

PD: Did you consider any other career opportunities while preparing?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: No, I was focused solely on Judicial Services, which I knew required undivided attention.

PD: In an evolving economic environment with numerous career opportunities, what motivated you to remain dedicated to Judicial Services?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Financial incentives, while important, were not my primary motivation. I wanted a role that allowed me to uphold justice and serve society. This passion for Judicial Services kept me motivated throughout my preparation.

PD: Can you share your thoughts on what’s most important during preparation?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Passion and dedication are essential, along with hard work. Support from family and friends is invaluable, especially during difficult times. It’s important not to stress over failures; they’re often stepping stones to future success.

PD: How did you handle time management during preparation?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Time management is unique to each person. I was aware of my weaker areas and planned accordingly. For exams like DJSE, time management is crucial as questions require thought and written answers within strict time limits. Regular practice with answer writing helped me improve my speed and efficiency.

PD: Did you prepare for the interview phase specifically?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Yes, I attended mock interviews at my coaching institute, which helped me identify areas to focus on. I revised laws, current affairs, and major judgments to prepare. My interview went smoothly, with questions based on my legal knowledge and personality.

PD: What materials did you use for General Studies preparation?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: I read newspapers and relied on Pratiyogita Darpan, which offered helpful articles, previous years’ papers, and subject-specific materials. I also used NCERT books for foundational knowledge and Lucent for additional General Knowledge.

PD: Do you feel educational or financial background affects preparation?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: I don’t believe so. Success in these exams depends on sincerity and hard work, regardless of one’s background.

PD: How did you find Pratiyogita Darpan as a resource?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: Pratiyogita Darpan was extremely useful. Sections like Compendium, question papers, and topic-specific articles were especially beneficial. The annual issues were also great resources.

PD: What advice would you give to future aspirants?

Ms. Surpreet Kaur: If you are passionate about the judiciary and committed to the preparation, success will come. Don’t give up, and be patient.
