It’s so easy to tell yourself you’ll get that problem or this one fixed at some point. Next week, next month, perhaps next year – does it really matter? After all, if you’re the one living in the house and you’re not intending to sell it any time soon, and if those problems we’re talking about don’t really bother you, what’s the harm in just leaving them until you’re really ready to put them right?
The harm is that those small problems can lead to much bigger ones that will take longer to fix, be more disruptive and cost more. Not only that, but some of these issues can even be dangerous to your health. It’s far better to fix the problems – or have an expert fix them for you – rather than leaving them. Read on to find out what problems we’re talking about.
- Mold
Mold looks bad, smells bad, is bad for your home’s structure, and bad for your health. If you ever spot it, it’s already time to get something done about it – mold spreads quickly and you might find that if you leave things for even a few weeks, entire walls and ceilings can be covered.
To begin with, you’ll need to ascertain the cause of the mold. There are a number of different reasons why it might occur, including damp, a leaking roof, an issue with the ground the house is built on or ventilation problems. Once you know the cause, you can make repairs to stop more mold from appearing. Only then can you make the decorative repairs to remove the mold that has already grown.
- Missing Roof Tiles
If you’ve noticed tiles on the ground around your house, perhaps after a bad storm or high winds (although they can fall just because they’re old, of course), this is not something you should ignore. The tiles must have come from somewhere, and that somewhere is going to be your roof.
When tiles fall from your roof, they will leave a gap behind and this will let rain inside. This can lead to mold (and we already know that’s a problem) as well as general damp, and any holes in your roof will mean that your heating and cooling bills will be higher, and it will take more energy to heat and cool your home (you’ll be losing a lot through the roof). Therefore, once you notice there is a problem with your roof, it’s best to hire Shoreline roofers right away.
- Clogged Gutters
Your gutters can very quickly become clogged with leaves and other debris that fall into them from the surrounding area. The issue is that the gutters then become blocked, and the rainwater they are meant to take away from your home spills over the edge instead. This can lead to foundation problems as the earth gets saturated, or it can lead to damp if the water continually spills down the structure of the house.
One way to prevent this from happening is to install gutter guards which keep out the larger elements of debris. As well as this, cleaning your gutters regularly will ensure that any blockages are removed before they become too much of an issue.
